If you are worried about your cataract surgery, at Eye Care Specialists of Florida, we can help. We understand that this process makes some patients nervous, and we are here to answer all of your questions about the procedure. Here are some of the more frequently asked questions that we receive from patients regarding cataracts and the surgery involved to remove them.
What are Cataracts?
Cataracts form on the natural lens of your eye, right behind the pupil, causing vision cloudiness.
Who Develops Cataracts?
While you can develop a cataract at any age, or even be born with one, they are more prevalent in individuals who are 50 years old and up. This is because cataracts usually develop over time. Roughly one half of the population 65 and older have some type of a cataract.
Why is My Eye Doctor Waiting to Remove My Cataract?
You may have been told that you have a cataract, but that your eye doctor wants to wait to remove it. Cataracts can be so small, that they are not interfering with your vision. Some cataracts never progress beyond this stage, so it won't be necessary to ever remove it. Consult with your eye doctor to find out if Cataracts are right for you.
Is Cataract Surgery Serious?
There's always a risk to any surgical procedure, but cataract surgery is one of the most common surgeries performed today. Choose a doctor with plenty of experience to decrease your chances of any surgical complications. Dr. Choudhri has extensive knowledge on Cataract and offers Advanced Cataract Surgery.
How Does the Doctor Remove My Cataract?
Your lens is held in place by a thin membrane. This is cut using a scalpel or a laser, depending on the technique your doctor uses. The lens is removed, and a new, artificial lens is put in its place.
Are There Side Effects to Cataract Surgery?
While side effects are rare, it is possible to experience pain, swelling, bleeding or infection from cataract surgery. It's important to report these problems immediately to your eye doctor.
