Many people get LASIK surgery to change their eyesight and end their need for glasses or contacts. However, not everyone is a good candidate for this surgery. If you are interested in this laser surgery, our ophthalmologist will have to assess you to see if you're a good candidate. At Eye Care Specialists of Florida in Kissimmee, FL, our eye surgeon will determine if you can safely get LASIK.
Before you can be considered for this type of laser surgery, our eye surgeon will have to do a health assessment. Your eyes should be relatively healthy with no major eye conditions or diseases. Generally, those with dry eye can't get this surgery. Having dry eye can mean eye irritation, and this is not ideal for surgery. You will also need to have a prescription that is within the acceptable range for LASIK. If your vision is extremely poor, you are unlikely to be a good candidate for it. You should also not get this surgery if you need cataract surgery. If you have cataracts, our eye doctor will likely want you to have cataract surgery before you get your LASIK surgery.
You must be at least 18 to get LASIK surgery in most cases, but it's often a better idea to wait until your mid-20s to get it. At this age, vision is mostly stabilized. If you are over 18, there is no limit to the ages of those who get the surgery. From about 40 to 60 years of age, people start to get presbyopia. This has an effect on focusing on items up close. Many LASIK surgeries do not include changing your up-close vision. Many LASIK patients over 40 will have to wear reading glasses for this reason.
If you are considering LASIK, our team can determine if you are a good candidate for it. At Eye Care Specialists of Florida, our eye surgeon will perform an eye exam to see if your eyes are healthy. Call us today to schedule an appointment.
