Cataract Awareness Month in June

The month of June has been established as Cataract Awareness Month by Prevent Blindness America. Our eye doctor at Eye Care Specialists of Florida encourages the community’s participation. An estimated 24 million Americans aged 40 and over have cataracts, but this condition can develop at any age—even in infancy. Our Kissimmee ophthalmologist, Dr. Choudhri, urges the important of regular eye exams and provides tips to protect your eyes from developing cataracts.

Why Cataract Awareness Month is Important

It’s easy to see the importance of regular examinations for cataracts once you realize that they are the leading cause in the United States for vision loss. Furthermore, cataracts are the leading cause of blindness globally, so dedicating an entire month to awareness and education about cataracts aims to help millions stave off vision loss through preventive measures.

Tips for Protecting Your Eyes from Cataracts

Cataracts are not 100% preventable due to genetic factors, certain medications, and age. However, there are several measures that can be taken to reduce the chances of cataract formation.

  1. Wear a pair of sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB ray protection regardless of the season. Even on cloudy days, the sun’s rays shine through which can lead to cataract formation. If you wear corrective lenses, a pair of prescription sunglasses can be obtained from our optometry team.
  2. If you smoke cigarettes, stop now. Tobacco smoke has free radicals that can damage the eye lens, and it vastly reduces the body’s antioxidants—two reasons those who smoke at least a pack a day have double the risk of cataract development.
  3. Individual who consume two or more alcoholic drinks daily appear to have an increased chance of cataracts when compared to those sticking with just one or two. Minimize alcohol intake to minimize the chances of cataract formation.
