Modern medical techniques and equipment have made surgery more effective, precise, and sophisticated than ever before, allowing for amazing success even with delicate tissues such as the corneas. If you need corneal surgery, you can rest assured that you've made the right decision by choosing Eye Care Specialists of Florida. Our Kissimmee ophthalmologist, Dr. Choudhri, has performed thousands of such operations and will serve as your guide through every step of the pre-surgical, surgical, and post-operative processes.
Procedures to Treat Corneal Disorders and Refractive Errors
There are many reasons why a cornea might require surgical attention. Injuries, chronic dry or conjunctivitis, and other abrasive situations can leave scars, scratches, or ulcers on the corneal surfaces, impeding the passage of light and blurring your vision. A condition called keratoconus causes the cornea to bulge outward into a cone shape instead of maintaining a normal curvature. This condition can grow worse and worse until corrective lenses can no longer compensate for the resulting vision problems. Some corneal surgeries are entirely optional, such as procedures to correct your vision so you no longer have to rely on glasses or contact lenses. Corneal surgeries performed by our eye surgeon include:
- Corneal transplantation - When a cornea is diseased, damaged, or deformed beyond all salvation, it can be replaced with either a donor cornea or an artificial cornea. Some corneal transplants only involve replacing certain layers of the cornea, not the entire thickness of tissue.
- Intacts - Intacs are tiny plastic inserts that are surgically installed into the corneas. These ring-shaped implants help to reduce the extreme curvature created by keratoconus.
- Corneal cross-linking - corneal cross-linking is another procedure that can be used to improve corneal function in keratoconus patients. This minimally-invasive procedure builds up the collagen that supports corneal tissues.
- Refractive surgery - Surgical procedures that alter the curvature and shape of the cornea can be used to correct astigmatism, farsightedness, nearsightedness, and presbyopia. The most common example is LASIK surgery.
What to Expect From Our Eye Surgeon
Our eye surgeon will evaluate your eyes and overall medical condition to ensure that you're a good candidate for corneal surgery. Many corneal procedures can be performed as outpatient procedures. Following surgery, we will prescribe any necessary medications, home care practices, and follow-up exams to help you achieve the best possible results from your surgery.
