Having dry eyes from time to time is common, but dealing with this condition on a frequent or ongoing basis can cause significant discomfort. It can also interfere with your ability to do everyday tasks, such as reading. Our Kissimmee ophthalmologist would like to share the following tips on at home remedies for dry eyes.
Add more foods with omega-3 fatty acids, such as walnuts and salmon, and foods with vitamin A, such as fruits and vegetables, to your diet. Vitamin A helps keep your eyes healthy, while omega-3 fatty acids can help increase tear production to relieve dry eyes.
Increase the humidity in your home to help your eyes retain more moisture. You can do this by using a humidifier to maintain humidity levels that are between 30 and 50 percent. Keep in mind that winter months can lower the humidity in your home.
Look away from computer screens frequently and blink more often. People typically blink less often while staring at screens, which can make dry eyes worse.
Use artificial tears. Relieve dry eyes on a temporary basis by using over-the-counter artificial tears from drug stores. Be prepared to try different brands until you find one that is comfortable for your eyes. For some people, this means using ones that do not contain preservatives.
Put a warm compress on dry eyes. This helps unblock tear glands, allowing more moisture to lubricate your eyes.
While at home remedies can provide relief, they only work short-term. If you have dry eyes and want relief that lasts longer, contact our Kissimmee eye care office at 407-483-0328 for an appointment. We offer services to help relieve dry eyes, including artificial tears, prescription medications to increase tear production, Prokera to heal the cornea and reduce chronic dry eyes, and surgery to plug the tear ducts in order to prevent them from draining.
