What are Cataracts?

Cataracts are a leading cause of vision loss and are quite common among people over 50.

Directly behind your pupils (the black holes in the colored part of your eyes that allow light in), you have a clear disc like structures called lenses. Your lenses help refocus and redirect light onto the tissues on the back of your eye called the retinas, which collect the visual information and prepare it to be sent to the brain via the optic nerves.

If a person has a cataract, one or both of these lenses can become cloudy. This happens because the proteins within the lens itself begin to change their structure. As a result, a person may begin to experience blurry and distorted vision.

What Happens in Cataract Surgery?

Cataracts can't be "cured," but fortunately the impaired lens can be surgically removed and replaced in a relatively simple outpatient ophthalmology procedure.

There's more than one way to remove a cataract, and each method has its own pros and cons. In the United States, there is two main type of cataract surgeries performed:

Phacoemulsification or "phaco" cataract surgery with a foldable intraocular lens (IOL) implant

The surgeon uses specialized instruments to make small incisions in the eye in order to access the cataract, which is broken up with ultrasonic energy and gently suctioned out in small pieces. Then, an instrument is used to insert a flexible IOL which unfolds (sort of like a ship in a bottle) and is secured in place. No stitches are required.

Laser-assisted cataract surgery

This is similar to phaco cataract surgery, but with the advantage of even higher precision and accuracy. Surgeons use computerized laser technology to make many of the same incisions and fragmenting the lens prior to removal.

We now offer laser-assisted cataract surgery here at our clinic in Kissimmee!
