Signs of Sight Loss
Sight loss affects individuals of all demographics. As one grows older, the likelihood of sight loss significantly increases. For instance, there is a 1 in 4 chance of individuals over the age of 65 developing sight loss. Generally, this problem is caused by a number of things but the most common causes are the conditions listed below:
1. Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP, Pigmentary Retinopathy) - RP is an inherited, progressive eye condition that is characterized by the decay of the retina. It is diagnosed at a very tender age. Though research is ongoing for a cure, there has not been much luck so far. A number of individuals retain a portion of sight, although it often leads to permanent sight loss.
2. Glaucoma - This condition is characterized by the continuous production of aqueous humor (eye fluid), which keeps the eye moist and maintains its shape. If there is a problem with the drainage system or if there is excess fluid production, eye pressure increases. This, in turn, leads to the deterioration of the optic nerve, which leads to gradual sight loss.
3. Cataracts - Once the lens becomes opaque; this signals the development of cataracts. Typically, this clouding first occurs in the central vision then progresses to the outward region. Development of cataracts can be identified by intolerance to bright light, double images or blurry vision.
Other eye conditions that may lead to sight loss include dry eye, cataract, corneal dystrophy, macular degeneration, inherited retinal dystrophy, and diabetic retinopathy.
