Fireworks Safety Tips

With the 4th of July just around the corner, many residents are eager to see incredible fireworks displays to celebrate Independence Day. Here at Eye Care Specialists of Florida, our Kissimmee eye doctor, Dr. Choudhri, is also excited for the holiday, but we urge all members of the community to be safe. This is why we are pleased to support Fireworks Safety Month that runs from June through Independence Day.

The Importance of Fireworks Safety Month

Sponsored by Prevent Blindness America, the purpose of this month is to spread awareness among the populace in an effort to prevent unnecessary injuries. Fireworks have a tendency to be somewhat unpredictable, which is why it may be wise to watch a professional exhibition. However, those who want to shoot off their own should understand the risks of irresponsible use. Common incidents may result such as burns, hearing loss, hand injuries, eye injuries, face injuries and smoke inhalation can dampen any celebrant’s experience with fireworks. In honor of Fireworks Safety Month, our optometry team offers these safety tips for your eyes.

Eye Safety Tips When Enjoying Fireworks

Responsible use is the key to preventing most fireworks injuries including the eyes. However, here are some eye-related safety tips to keep your family safe this holiday.

  1. Only use fireworks in an open area.
  2. Avoid using handheld fireworks such as sparklers that can emit bright, searing hot sparks near the face and eyes. Children especially are prone to eye damage from holding fireworks.
  3. Always wear safety glasses when lighting fireworks. Those needing prescription safety glasses can obtain them at Eye Care Specialists of Florida.
  4. Keep an eye wash station nearby in case debris enters the eye.
  5. Have a first aid kit on hand in case of eye or any other type of injury.
  6. Seek help immediately if anything gets in your eyes, as fireworks contain extremely harmful compounds that can cause permanent damage including blindness.
