Do you or someone you love have pink eye? Are you wondering how to treat it and how long the infection will last? Here at Eye Care Specialists of Florida, we would be delighted to help you find the answers and solutions you’re looking for.
So what exactly is pink eye? Also called conjunctivitis, pink eye is an infection of the conjunctiva, which is the lining of the eye and eyelid. Infections are caused by bacteria or viruses that get into your eyes and cause redness, irritation and swelling.
How long pink eye lasts depends on what type of infection it is. If the infection is bacterial, then eye drops can usually clear it up in a matter of days. However, a viral infection will need to run its course entirely.
If your kid has pink eye, plan for them to be out of school for several days, and possibly more than a week. If you’re the one who’s suffering the condition, you will probably need to stay away from work for at least a few days.
There are many potential treatment methods for pink eye. Antibiotic drops, as stated above, will work for bacterial infections. If the infection is caused by a virus, then you can only try to soothe your eyes while it works itself out. Lubricating eye drops may help, as can compresses applied to the outside of the eyes. Hot or cold depends on preference.
In cases of seasonal allergies or an allergic reaction, you may do better with eye drops that contain an antihistamine to calm the body’s response to the allergen. It’s best to consult a doctor before using any type of medication, especially in the case of a young child.
